11 Jimi Hendrix – Voodoo Child (Slight Return) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJumY4a4Ajg
Hey all! Good to be back after a few weeks. Getting close to finishing this project up. We’ll wind it up in a couple of months and I’ll be out of your hair, haha.
All I knew about Voodoo Child before last week was the opening riff. Every guitar player knows this one. Was a lot of fun and a good challenge to dig into the whole thing. I did Machine Gun by Hendrix a few months ago and was surprised to find the 2 pieces to be quite similar, so I had a good headstart.
Now normally with this project I stay away from screwing around with the original and don’t generally do a lot of improvising. I know how to improvise but it’s not what the point of the whole project was to begin with.
I wanted to replicate, learn and study them as I went, not so much dig into my own improvisational skills. That said, I had some fun with this one, and while sticking pretty close to the recording for the most part, I did some improv with this one. Mostly in the second half.
To much guitar fun in this one to leave anything out, so I covered the whole thing. I’ve been on a run of blues solos the past few weeks including this one, and I’ve got one more coming up next before moving back into a bit more shredding at #9.
Hope you like my take on this one. Was a joy to play. Put this one down at about 5:00 in the morning as I needed to pull an all nighter to get it rehearsed and recorded. As a result I look a bit of a disheveled mess, lol.
Thanks as always for checking out my post and all the kind words. Means a lot to an old fella.
You guys take care of yourselves.
