[DISCUSSION] Do you guys consciously set of guitar goals?

I have played guitar for 18 years now, but you might not guess it from listening to me. 🙂 I spent a lot of time with my guitar, but in a very unstructured way. I’m self-taught, which has led me to having some major gaps in my knowledge, but also to having my own unique bag of tricks and unique way of thinking on the guitar. I’ve always been focused on songwriting and singing, so my guitar got good enough and never better.

For the last six months, I’ve been taking a structured approach to learning. Setting goals, and figuring out what I need to learn/practice to achieve them. Scales of all sorts, soloing, phrasing, Bossa progressions, solidifying my Jazz chord vocabulary, learning fresh picking/strumming patterns, etc. It’s all a work in progress, but I’ve been feeling completely refreshed musically. I’m having fun, playing things I never thought to play, and I’m understanding more facets of the guitar every day.

It got me wondering how other guitarists learn. Do you guys have short or long term goals in mind? And if so, I’d love to hear what they are.
