[Discussion] The single most important practice strategy that I used in 2021.

There are many great practice strategies. This post is subjective to my experiences in 2021.

In 2021 I video recorded my playing. Like hours and hours of it. Then I viewed every hour. The results were amazing. Here is what I found:

  • Recording provides an opportunity to be objective about your performance in a way that is difficult to achieve while performing.

  • I am able to pinpoint what works and what doesn’t and make a coherent list of things to work on. I also make a list of things that work so that I make sure to keep doing them or expand on them.

  • Video recordings allow you to see your stage presence. Do I look into it? Am I enjoying it? Do I look like I’m in control? Or do I look lost, worried or like a statue?

  • It’s good to have samples of your playing that you can easily share.

You will need to be very focused and open minded when viewing your recordings. But the results are worth it. I am now more self aware of what is working and where I need to improve.

Happy to hear your reactions and suggestions on what practice methods have worked for you.
