[Newbie] Finally got some gear, and excited to learn how to rock at 31! Glad to be here!

Hello Everyone!

It’s finally happened, for my birthday this year I finally got myself some gear to start learning how to play electric guitar. I’ve always wanted to learn how to play, and really wish this day had come way earlier in my life, but you know how it goes… life lets you do things when life feels like it lol.

I’m so stoked, music has always been a huge part of my life, I grew up and thrived on 60s-70s classic, and hard rock primarily, but I don’t box myself in to any specific genre, I love music from classical to rap, and everything in between, if it sounds good, I will listen to it! Lol But really, my greatest love has always been the diverse tones of electric guitar. I played around on my grandpas acoustic when I was in my single digit years, later I got a keyboard and started playing some songs by ear, but other than that, I’ve not got much playing experience. So here I am, an old newbie. Lol

For the guitar: I finally saved enough and splurged on my dream guitar. I’ve got a shiny brand new Ibanez S Premium in Cerulean Blue Burst, man I wish I could show it to you guys, I’m so proud to own it! The first time I saw this guitar I fell in love and said if they’re still available when I’m ready to buy, this was the model I was getting. Yes I am aware as a Newbie I could’ve spent less and used the savings on lessons or upgrades to other gear. But I am in love, I justified it by saying that this guitar is so nice it’s gonna make me wanna pick it up and practice whenever I look at it, it seems like it should be a very versatile instrument between the pickup selection, and the trem system, and it should give me plenty of guitar to grow in to. The exotic woods are beautiful, the neck feels absolutely amazing, and the slim, contoured body feels super nice..

For the Amp: I honestly don’t know much about the differences between amp brands tones, I did know one thing, I wanted a tube driven amp for that classic sound and natural overdrive. During my reading and research I stumbled upon the MonoPrice StageRight 1×15 combo amp, it seems to be well reviewed, it has tubes, spring reverb, and even a 1w practice mode, and at a reasonable price too! I read some people have upgraded the tubes for even better sound. I figured this fit me perfectly, I can enjoy playing this one for a while for practice while I learn more about Amps, perhaps get to try a few, and learn what I want in terms of tone from an amp. It’s not too shabby looking either, a nice departure from all the black on the market.

For FX: I grabbed the Boss ME-80 Multi-FX, I figured this would be the most cost effective way for me to experiment with FX, it has a WaWa pedal, a bunch of cool connectivity features, and plenty for me to learn. I love the fact that it has analog controls to dial everything in too. Once I learn which effects I use most, and experiment I can then look into investing into some quality analog pedals.

Super excited to begin my journey, I’ve got Yousician to get me started, will be harnessing all of the great teachings on YouTube, and checking out the resources page on this sub. Later on I hope to have the time for some in person lessons.

Really digging bluesy, and funky rock right now. I’ve been listening to Funk #48 & 49 lately by James gang, I can only hope through practice and perserverence that I can GET DOWN with a guitar like Joe Walsh does when playing those two songs, damn!

It feels great to finally join the ranks!

If you have any advice for a beginner, especially an older beginner feel free to share it! I’d also love to hear your experiences with any of the gear mentioned.

Thanks for reading, and rock on!
