So my grandfather recently gifted me his ~1940s-era acoustic lap steel guitar (image 1) and I am looking for some advice on what to do with it. It’s in decent shape (I think), so I’d like to try restoring it and learning to play it.
Half the strings are missing or broken, so I’ll need to replace those, but I’m not sure if I need to get a certain type/style of steel string since it’s so old? The slide bar and finger picks (image 2) are pretty rusty, so I’m really just wondering whether they’re worth saving or if I should just replace them. The body itself appears to be in decent shape though, so that’s a plus. Granted, I haven’t inspected it very thoroughly and obviously testing out the sound isn’t an option at the moment since everything is all rusted.
There were also some books (image 3) in the case which look like they’ll be useful for learning, I’d just appreciate a (more knowledgeable) second opinion.
Thanks so much!
