[QUESTION] Advice for lead guitar?

Hi,

I’m going to be playing with this band on the weekend doing rock covers. They’ve asked me to focus on lead parts. Thing is, many of the covers are from songs that are primary one rhythm guitar and with not much in the way of solos. Any advice on how to approach this? Some of the songs include:

Green Day – When I Come Around

7 Mary 3 – Cumbersome

Lit – My Own Worst Enemy

Everlong – Foo Fighters

Plush – STP

Would you recommend doubling up with the rhythm guitar or just sitting back and waiting for breaks in vocals to add embellishments? Just trying to get some ideas on how to approach lead when the original song has sparse “lead” parts.
