[Question] Finger picks vs Calluses

Hey All, I am rather into hybrid picking, though I have been in a phase of playing mostly electric recently. I broke out the acoustic recently, and I thought it would be interesting to try using finger picks on my middle, ring, and pinky fingers to have consistency of tone and projection. I certainly did get consistency of tone, and it was loud, which was awesome. However I lost the ability to plant, it’s a lot clumsier, and it’s harder to shape tone color (I may try a different style that does allow some skin contact).

But the interesting part came when I took the finger picks off. At present I have a very developed callus on my middle finger, and basically none on my ring and pinky. Using the finger with the callus was WAY closer to the finger pick than I expected (I have zero nails btw). Whereas the other two fingers are much quieter and softer.

So I am looking to hear from fingerpickers who have experience with finger picks and fully developed calluses. How close to the tone and projection of finger picks can you get with just calluses on your fingers and good technique?

Thanks!
